Clay-Amphora Wine: Alentejo's Ancestral Tradition Reimagined
Clay-amphora wine is more than a winemaking method; it is a cultural heritage that takes us back to Roman times, while remaining true to the roots of Alentejo. At Talha de Frades, we honour this ancestral technique, where every wine is an expression of the terroir, with the authenticity and simplicity that only the natural clay-amphora process can offer. This method has won over a new generation of enthusiasts and continues to raise clay-amphora wines to new heights of ageing potential and complexity.
The Ancestral Process
The magic of clay-amphora wine begins with careful grape selection. The grapes are then crushed and placed in clay amphoras — the famous "talhas". With this technique, the grapes ferment in contact with the skins, pips and stems, in a fully natural process. This slow, gradual fermentation produces wines with rich structure and authentic flavours, where each bottle becomes a true reflection of Alentejo.
A New Era for Wines of Ageing
Mr. Alexandre Frade, founder of Talha de Frades, believes in the ageing potential of clay-amphora wine, arguing that this type of wine, produced with traditional techniques, can develop in depth and complexity over the years. It is this vision that raises clay-amphora wine to a higher level, preserving its artisanal character and the essence of the terroir, while allowing a unique maturation that is impossible to reproduce with modern methods.
At Talha de Frades, we don't just preserve this tradition — we also innovate over time, creating wines that celebrate the past and look to the future. Discover how each bottle reflects the accumulated knowledge of generations and offers an experience that unites history and flavour.
